LOS MATARON!  THE SPANISH SHOCKER…

Defending 2010 World Cup winners Spain went into this Cup as the favorite having also won their 2nd European Championship years ago. With legendary Coach Vicente del Bosque at the helm the team opened with a disgraceful 5-1 loss to the Netherlands. In 2010, they also lost their first game and went on to win the cup and lets not forget Spain dashed the Dutch’s hopes of winning their first ever World Cup 4 years ago…so present company just figured it was payback.

Today proved otherwise. Unexpectedly, 14th place ranked Chile didn’t just hold their own against the Iberians, they played a solid game, intercepted their opponents “tiki-taka” style, defended their goal, and scored 2 goals (20’ Eduardo Vargas / 43’ Charles Aranguiz) before the first half was even over!! Given the Dutch 3-2 win in a tight game with Australia earlier, the loss meant “La Furia Rojo” (“The Red Fury”) would be sipping caipirinhas in Ipanema versus advancing to the next round.

For soccer lovers around the world, the news is tragic especially when you consider the Spanish line up…they were the “dream” team.
